Walkout and MIA Passes

Learn how to locate unaccounted for students who should not be in your hallways.

Updated over a week ago

Sometimes, students may disregard a teacher’s instructions and leave the classroom without permission. SmartPass can help you respond quickly in these situations by flagging these students with a unique pass designation. By creating a dedicated room titled “Walkout” or “MIA,” you empower your hall monitor staff to immediately identify and track students who are in the hallway without authorization. This simple setup enhances communication and ensures a faster response when accountability matters most.

Benefits

  • Real-Time Communication

Enables staff to quickly communicate when a student leaves the classroom without permission or ends their own pass while still in the hallway.

  • Behavior Documentation

Automatically logs incidents, creating a record of how often these walkouts or unauthorized pass actions occur.

  • Data-Driven Decision Making

Provides reviewable data that supports more informed and consistent decisions around disciplinary actions.

  • Improved Hallway Awareness

Gives hall monitors better visibility into why a student is in the hallway, allowing them to prioritize locating students flagged as “Walkout” or “MIA.”

How to set up and use

  1. Create a room and title it "Walkout" or "MIA". You could also use whatever terminology you wish here. We suggest a color that stands out, and is not shared with any other passes so the pass can quickly be identified.

    1. If you have a set group of staff who monitor your hallways be sure to add them as teachers in the room so they receive notification alerts.

  2. Adjust whether or not this pass counts towards pass limits. You may wish to count this as a pass so student's don't walk out and still have their allotted number of passes in addition to that.

  3. Any time a student leaves the room without a pass or permission, instruct teachers to generate a pass from their classroom to your newly created room. This can be done on their teacher device, or a kiosk if using one.

  4. Ensure hall monitor staff know to look for student's on these passes as a priority.

  5. Teach admin staff how to pull reports on this data. This report data will be particularly useful to drive potential disciplinary action as needed.

  6. Consider having hall monitor staff who located the student make a report on the pass noting the details on where and how they located the student.

  7. For larger schools where hall staff may not know every student, ensure you have your student's pictures on the passes.
